Entomology Consultant and Research Director, NIPCAM June, 1997 to present. Provide consultation and advice on wood-destroying organism damage to wood structures and pest management for poultry, porcine and dairy facilities, while conducting research into insecticide efficacy and insect behavior for industrial clients.

Research Associate Entomologist - USDA, ARS, (RRRC) Richard Russell Research Center, Phytochemical Unit, Feb., 1995 - Sept., 1996. Operated and maintained an Extrel GC/MS system with on-column cold-type injection. Utilized the NIST/Battelle mass spectral database program (DOS-type) for spectral matching. In charge of all maintenance, operation, sample preparation and interpretation for a Hewlett-Packard 486/100MHz computerized 1090/1040 HPLC system. Responsible for establishing cooperative working relationships with university, state and federal researchers on chemical and entomological problems with integrated pest management applications. Supervised sweet potato whitefly culture and studies of efficacy of synthetic and natural sucrose esters as whitefly control compounds. Conducted studies of attraction of naturally-occurring compounds to the sweet potato weevil.
USDA Physical Science Technician - USDA, ARS, RRRC, Tobacco Research Unit, Athens, Georgia, June, 1994 - Feb., 1995. Purified two anti-insect feeding compounds from Nicotiana leaf samples for use in insect bioassays and in structure identification. Participated in analysis of structural data from FAB and CI mass spectroscopy as well as NMR in determining the chemical structure of the anti-insect feeding compounds. Worked with the sweet potato whitefly in evaluation of sucrose esters as insect control compounds.
USDA Internship/Physical Science Technician, USDA Teacher Internship Program, USDA, ARS, RRRC, Food Quality Evaluation Unit - June through August, 1990, 1991, and 1993. Conducted studies of (1) stone fruit volatile compounds, sugars and acids using derivation/identification via GC and GC/MS and (2) purification of a variety of potential insect development inhibitors from plants.

Purified gram quantities of the insect development inhibitor maysin from corn silk via HPLC, reversed phase and silica gel column chromatography.

Research Associate Biochemist, University of Georgia x, Athens, Georgia, November, 1986 - August, 1988. Conducted studies of plant cell pH using a close coupled SSD videospectrofluorimetric microscope system. Developed lab protocol for studies of plant cell pH and for fish (the Japanese Medaka) egg fertilization phenomena using fluorescent indicator dyes and the calcium photoflor aquorin. Established a clear photographically-recorded link between the surface gel-formation wave, an intracellular pH wave, and an intracellular calcium shift immediately following in vitro fertilization in the Medaka egg.

Completed literature evaluations of medical and toxicological chemicals for industrial and legal clients. Office Manager and Corporate Treasurer, 1985-1986. Prepared and wrote extensive toxicology reports, publications and advice in support of defense litigation. Wrote affidavits and testified as an entomology pesticide expert. Participated as coauthor in the first article establishing the similarity in infection rates between all risk groups exposed to HIV infection in the United States.
Research Associate Zoologist, University of Georgia Zoology Department, Athens, Georgia, December, 1979 - September, 1984 and July 1983 - September, 1984. Conducted studies on the synthesis of radiolabeled primaquine (an antimalarial compound) and evaluation of this compound on the protozoan which causes Chagas' Disease (culture forms of Trypanosoma cruzi). Participated in the purification of enzymes from this protozoan and fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). Taught graduate students as the lab part of a course in Comparative Biochemical Toxicology.

Was Guest Lecturer on Pesticide Metabolism in the graduate-level Toxicology class and instructed individual graduate students in Pharmacology. Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant, University of Georgia Entomology Department, Athens, Georgia, June, 1973 - June, 1979. Instructed undergraduate students in the Forest Entomology class laboratories. Prepared laboratory manuals and materials for approximately 30-40 students per quarter. Performed graduate research on the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis), including establishing the enzyme system that it uses to metabolize toxic pine terpenes and the similarity of these enzymes to detoxification mixed function oxidases in a variety of house fly strains and in laboratory rats. Completed and published the first complete isolation and biochemical characterization, including amino acid analysis, of a constitutive cytochrome P-450 mixed function oxidase from the liver of rats.
