wooly_adelgid_imidaclopridImidacloprid is effective at treating wooly adelgid infestations on Eastern Hemlock trees.

Imidacloprid is a neonicicotinoid insecticide originally developed by Bayer.  This molecular structure of this insecticide is modeled after nicotine and works by inhibiting the breakdown of acetylcholinesterase an enzyme that brakes down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.  This causes excess acetylcholine to buildup between the insects nerves leading to paralysis.

Imidacloprid as an Insecticide

As an insecticide, Imidacloprid is highly effective on a wide variety of insect pest.  Imidacloprid is used in the control of insects including darkling beetles in poultry houses, termites, soil insects, fleas on pets, and the wooly adelgid.  It is also used as a seed treatment to prevent insects from damaging them.  Imidicloprid is a systemic pesticide that can be taken up by tree and plant roots and moved to the leaves, pollen, and nectar.  This is why it has been effective in treating eastern hemlock trees from wooly adelgid infestations.

Imidacloprid is a safe insecticide to use as long as you follow the label.  It is listed as moderately toxic if ingested and dermal toxicity is listed as very low.  The blood-brain barrier in vertebrates blocks access of imidacloprid to the central nervous system, reducing its toxicity.  As with the application of any insecticide it always recommended to wear clothes that cover the skin, gloves, and a mask.

Imidacloprid is present in a wide range of products.  It is widely used in flea control products such as Advantix and Frontline.  Bayer created a very successful darkling beetle control product containing imidacloprid called Credo.  It is now off patent and many effective generics such as Midash Forte have been developed for darkling beetle control.  Bed bug products such as Temprid SC contain imidacloprid and are highly effective.  One of the best fly baits, QuickBayt by Bayer, contains imidacloprid as its active ingredient. Other products containing imidaclopric include Admire, Condifor, Dominion, Gaucho, Premier, Premise, Provado, and Marathon.

Imidacloprid can be applied in a variety of ways.  It is water soluble and is often sprayed with conventional sprayers such as backpack sprayers and handheld pump sprayers.  It can be applied with a backpack fogger such as the Stihl SR-450.  Some products are in powder form and can be either mixed into water or spread with a duster.  As mentioned earlier imidacloprid is a systemic pesticide and can be taken up by trees and plants to prevent pest from damaging them.  Application made to plants and trees are often mixed in water and poured around the base of the plant or tree to be taken up by the roots.
